PSHE/RSE
Aims of the Curriculum
At key stage 3 the curriculum aims for pupils to build on the knowledge and understanding, skills, attributes, and values they have acquired and developed during primary school.
The PSHE/RSE curriculum at Houstone School acknowledges and addresses the changes that young people experience, beginning with transition to secondary school, the challenges of adolescence and their increasing independence. It teaches the knowledge and skills which will equip them for the opportunities and challenges of life.
Pupils learn to manage diverse relationships, their online lives, the increasing influence of peers and the media. Equality, Respect and Values and how to navigate the ever challenging and changing world. The curriculum is taught in a spiral approach so that pupils build on their learning year on year. The core themes are:
- Core Theme 1: Rights, Responsibilities and British Values
- Core Theme 2: Understanding and Celebrating Inclusivity, Diversity & Equality
- Core Theme 3: Healthy Relationships and Sex Education
- Core Theme 4: Staying Safe in the On and Offline World
- Core Theme 5: Health and Wellbeing
- Core Theme 6: Careers and Life beyond school
At key stage 4, pupils deepen their knowledge and understanding, extend and rehearse skills, and further explore attitudes, values and attributes acquired during key stage 3.
How PSHE/RSE is taught?
In KS3 and KS4, PSHE is taught in tutor time by their tutors. The tutorial Programme also complements PSHE, through the delivery of character education and delivering key aspects of SMSC. We also deliver workshops and assemblies to further deepen and embed our young people’s knowledge and understanding.
The PSHE/RSE curriculum underpins the DfE’s requirement to promote British Values. At Houstone School, we recognise the multi-cultural, multi-faith and ever-changing nature of the UK. We also understand the vital role we have in ensuring individuals are not subjected to intimidation or radicalisation by those wishing to influence them unduly, or illegally. At Houstone School, we educate pupils to and follow equal opportunities guidance to guarantee there will be no discrimination against an individual or group, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status.
The five key British Values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs are underpinned by the school values which are throughout all elements of the curriculum but none more so than PSHE where we, through the ‘Careers and Life beyond school’ strand prepare pupils for life beyond the formal, examined curriculum ensuring that we promote and reinforce British Values to all of our pupils.
